Why one wing setting cannot do everything

Break the lap into driving tasks

Think of a lap as a sequence of jobs. On a straight, the driver wants to build speed efficiently. Before a corner, the driver has to slow the car, turn it and position it for the next acceleration zone. A configuration that helps one part of that sequence may impose a cost elsewhere.

Understand the aerodynamic compromise

Downforce contributes to the load that helps the tires generate cornering force. Producing it can also bring aerodynamic drag. Active aero gives the car different configurations instead of treating the entire lap as one fixed compromise. Several factors can combine in an overtake

Do not attribute an entire passing move to the one visual change the camera happens to show. The following car may have carried more speed out of the previous corner. The leading car may have chosen a different defensive line. Electrical deployment is another variable. These influences can overlap within a few seconds.

A hypothetical lap comparison

A better exit can start the move

Imagine Car A leaves a corner two car lengths behind Car B. A uses a better exit line and reaches the beginning of the straight with more speed. Even if both cars then use the same aerodynamic configuration, A can initially close the gap.

A similar finish can have a different cause

Now imagine A exits poorly but gains speed later. The television image at the braking zone might look similar, yet the source of the opportunity is different. In the first scenario, corner execution started the move. In the second, the later speed difference did more of the work. Neither example is a measurement from a real Grand Prix.

Rewatch the corner before the straight

Rewatch the previous corner before deciding why an overtake happened. That simple habit produces a more complete explanation than watching only the moment the cars become side by side.
