OPS combines two batting measures
OPS adds on-base percentage and slugging percentage. It is a convenient batting summary because it puts reaching base and accumulating bases from hits into one number. Start with a simple addition
Add the components without inventing a probability
Imagine a hitter has a .360 on-base percentage and a .480 slugging percentage. The OPS is .840. The calculation is easy, which is part of the measure’s appeal. You do not need to interpret .840 as an 84% chance of anything; it is the sum of two rates. A crowded stat line can feel intimidating until the two components make sense; then a familiar hitter’s profile often becomes much easier to describe.
Compare two hypothetical profiles
Now compare two imaginary hitters:

An equal total can hide different strengths
The combined figure is identical. A has the higher on-base component; B has the higher slugging component. A headline that gives only OPS makes those profiles look the same when the components show a useful difference.
Slugging is not simply the share of hits that go for extra bases
Count total bases to understand slugging
Slugging uses total bases from hits relative to at-bats. In a hypothetical ten at-bats, two singles and one double produce four total bases. Four divided by ten gives .400 slugging.
The same hits can carry different base value
Change the double into a home run and the same three hits now produce six total bases, for .600 slugging. The number of hits is unchanged, but their base value is different. That is why batting average alone cannot capture the whole difference between those two samples.
Small examples teach arithmetic, not lasting ability
These tiny samples are arithmetic illustrations. They are much too small to support a confident claim about a real hitter’s lasting ability.

Check the period behind the rate
An OPS over a brief run of plate appearances can move sharply after a few events. A longer record contains more evidence, though it can also span changes in opponents, health, role or skill. Always ask which period you are examining and why that period was chosen.
Align periods and opportunity counts
When comparing two hitters, use comparable periods and show opportunities alongside the rate. A deliberately selected hot week should not silently stand in for a season. A career number should not automatically answer a question about current form.
What the number leaves outside the frame
OPS addresses batting rather than every role
OPS is a batting measure. It does not directly tell you how a player fields a position, runs the bases or contributes as a pitcher. Even within hitting, the path to the number matters: strikeouts, walks, contact and power can combine in different ways.

Read an OPS line in four steps
Read the line in a consistent order
First confirm the season or date range. Then read OBP and SLG before adding them mentally. Next check the number of opportunities. Finally, return to the baseball question you were trying to answer.
Use the shortcut with its context intact
That process takes only a few extra seconds. It turns a compact summary into a more specific description of a hitter, while keeping the convenience that makes OPS useful in the first place.
