Follow Curry after he gives up the ball

Start when Curry gives the ball to a teammate. Does he stand where he passed from, cut toward the basket, or move toward another player who can screen? Now watch his defender. The defender must keep track of movement while the ball may be creating a different threat elsewhere.

The second movement changes the problem

This is a useful exercise for any team with active shooters. The first pass changes who controls the ball. The next movement can change who has the advantage.

One screen creates several possible responses

Imagine a shooter runs toward a teammate setting a screen. If the defender trails tightly, the shooter may have a route around the screen. If the defender moves early to deny that route, a cut in the other direction may become available. If two defenders commit to the shooter, the screening teammate may find space.

The scorer may arrive later in the sequence

These are hypothetical possibilities, not a reconstruction of a particular Warriors possession. They show why the player who scores may be several decisions removed from the action that first disturbed the defense.

Watch the defensive change at the screen

On a replay, pause your attention on the screen rather than the shot. Which defender changes direction? Which passing lane appears at that moment? Who is forced to cover the next player?

Make defensive attention visible

Commentators use “gravity” to describe defensive attention drawn by a threat. For a viewer, it is most useful when connected to something visible: a defender staying close to a shooter, two players following one movement, or help arriving late elsewhere.

Explain what the attention opened up

Avoid treating the word as a complete explanation. Ask where the attention came from and what became available because of it. If no passing lane opens and no teammate gains an advantage, there is more work to do before claiming the movement caused a successful play.

Review the attempt before grading the result

A missed open shot and a made difficult shot can distort an immediate judgment of the offense. Review the path to the attempt. Did the team force a useful defensive rotation? Was the receiver balanced and ready? Did a passing delay allow the defense to recover?

Track useful creation across possessions

Separating the creation of an attempt from its final result helps you notice patterns across multiple possessions. It also gives context to effective field goal percentage, which describes shooting output without explaining every action that produced it.
