Leave flexibility in the viewing plan

Follow the court and match sequence

Equal games can hide unequal pressure

Two players might each hold serve three times and arrive at 3–3. One may have moved through comfortable service games; the other may have faced repeated break points. The score records the same number of games, but the route there can suggest different vulnerabilities.

Find the first attackable ball

During the next service game, notice the first ball the returner can attack. Is the server recovering position after a wide serve, or immediately defending the second shot? Does a deep return regularly prevent the server from moving forward? These are visible patterns that a score update cannot provide.

Return position creates a trade-off

A returner standing farther back gains time but concedes some court position. A player moving inside the baseline is accepting less reaction time for a chance to take the ball earlier. Neither position is automatically correct; its value depends on the serve, surface, rally pattern and player’s execution.

Follow one player for a full game

Try following only the returner for one game. Track the starting location, the direction of the return and where the next ball lands. Then switch to watching the server. The same exchange often looks different once you pay attention to who has room to move forward.

Identify the scoring format

Describe the adjustment under pressure

Avoid reading every tense moment as a change in personality or mental strength. A difficult serve, a mistimed return or a tactical choice can decide a point without revealing a permanent trait. A more useful final-week conversation asks what pattern each player trusted under pressure—and whether the opponent found a way to interrupt it.
